Genre is simply how films are categorised; one of the main purposes of it is to differentiate a wide range of films for suitable audiences. It creates expectations for the audience before they view the film. Sub genre is when two genres are combined, they help to inherit audiences who enjoy both genres of films. Films with sub genres are becoming increasingly popular. Some of the sub genres of thrillers are:

We can tell from the poster on the right that the movie The Mechanic would be categorised as a action-thriller. It is easy to state this for many reasons; firstly, there is an explosion and a helicopter in the poster, two of the most common conventions of action-thriller films. Also, there is a 'target' aimed at the title, The Mechanic, which indicates that this movie will be dangerous and action packed with lots of shooting. Finally, the main actor, Jason Statham, has been in countless action-thriller films previously, so he is one of the key attractions and selling points of the film.
