Conventions Of Film Openings

Psycho.

Immediately the audience are intruduced to the production and distribution company, which in this case is paramount.

Psycho uses a classic opening, this hooks the audience through graphics, sound and editing. We are introduced to the director which is presented in a bold, black and white graphics, to enhance the overall exsperience.

The sound which is used in the opening of psycho, immediatly the audience know the genre of the film as it and creates a sense of thrill. The film logo has been edited to look distorted which may imply the meaning of the word itself.

As the film begins we start of with an establishing shot, which allows us as the audience to know the location we are in. The graphics provide us with the date and time of this location.

The pan shot the comes to zoom into the window to establish the different movement of the camera and where it is taking the audience.

The film begins with an establishing shot which allows the audience to create a sense of location and as to where this film is set. This shot then slowly pans whilst zooming into a window, creating suspense of what may be lurking behind. We are then introduced to two characters which then set’s the scene and hook’s the audience.

Unknown.

Firstly we are introduced to the production and distribution companies n the opening sequence. which then follows on to star the director and characters.

Here we are introduced to the main character through the title sequence.

A close up of the briefcase has been used to foreshadow later events.

A wide shot of this statue has been used to create a sense of location as this is located in the front of the Queen’s palace.

A close up of the rope has been used to build tension up to the main crash.

The opening starts with a wide shot of a view out of the window, in which we get the see the title sequence of the production and distribution companies. The view from the window then zooms back into the plane, in which the protagonist is sitting. We are then introduced to the characters, starring in the movie; the title sequence is fairly slow paced therefore implying the tone of the film, in this case is quite tragic. Also the non diegetic sound coordinating with the title sequence is also slow paced, foreshadowing later events. We are then plunged straight into the narrative, which creates suspense and raises questions. We also receive a sense of location through camera shots of the statue located at the Queen’s palace and dialogue as the women says ‘We’re in Berlin’ as exiting the airport. We are introduced to various close ups of objects such as, the briefcase, mobile phone and fridge freezer, this allows tension to build until the main crash.
